HOOPESTON REGIONAL HEALTH CENTER

Hoopeston HospitalIn 1956, Dr. Werner Fliesser and other local business and community leaders had a vision to form a not-for-profit hospital that would provide health care services to the people of Hoopeston and the surrounding areas. That grand vision currently stands today as Hoopeston Regional Health Center. The hospital, which opened 50 beds in 1962, has served this community for 44 years.

Hoopeston HospitalOver the years the beginning grand vision of a hospital has grown even grander. Hoopeston Regional Health Center now includes Hoopeston Community Memorial Hospital, Nursing Home, Charlotte Ann Russell Medical Center, Country Terrace Senior Apartments and the Healthcare Foundation.

As of June of 2006, the Health Center employs 230 people from Hoopeston and the surrounding communities. These caring and dedicated people all play a part in the quality health care received at Hoopeston Regional Health Center.

Hoopeston school kidsThe Hoopeston Area School District is 265 square miles with 1,380 students (H.S. enrollment 360) enrolled, 105 certified staff, 5 administrators, and 75 classified employees. The Hoopeston Area School District is a K-12 Community Unit District offering a full range of programs including a strong vocational program, hoopeston school kids
cutting-edge technology program, excellent fine arts curriculum, full day kindergarten, gifted program, and migrant program. The district is also a member of the Vermilion Association for Special Education.

SILGAN CONTAINER, 126

Silgan ContainerAmerican can company opened a facility in Hoopeston, IL in 1925, employing 500 people with 11 can lines and 16 presses. The plant produced 165 million cans per year. In 1985 the facility became American National Can, followed by Pechiney in 1991 and the current Silgan Container Company which began in Hoopeston in 1995. Silgan Container employees 126 people and produces an estimated 1,975,977 tin can ends per year. Silgan Container Corporation is the largest provider of metal food packaging in the United States.

Hoopeston Foods Inc. was originally established in 1878. After numerous name changes, acquisitions, and mergers the name of the plant was changed from the Illinois Canning Company to the Joan of Arc Company in 1967. In 1985 the Joan of Arc Company was purchased by the Pillsbury Company to expand the Green Giant Line. In 1995, the Hoopeston, Illinois plant was purchased and operated as a private company under the name of Hoopeston Foods Inc., with the corporate offices in Burnsville, Minnesota and a second processing facility in Denver, Colorado. The Hoopeston plant produces a variety of can sizes for customers such as Kroger, Aldi’s, Save-A-Lot, IGA, Brooks, Country Market, and Meijers. As a Kosher processing plant, this facility is also one of the largest producers of organic and natural products in North America. The plant packs an excess of 25,000,000 pounds of bean products annually.
